Evolution of Language
Last time we discussed the value of Being Creative in your thinking. Today we'll look at the evolution of language with relation to the world of the web.
One of the exciting aspects of the internet in particular (and of our technology driven society in general) is the constant evolution of new concepts and ideas, with the resultant need of language and tech speak to evolve with these concepts and ideas. Language is a wonderful tool that is able to evolve instantaneously to accommodate and define these concepts and ideas, according meaning to new words created.
The old rules have been tossed out the window, and the evolution of language has transcended the established protocols. Sometimes a simple amalgamation of existing words is used to embody new concepts, e.g. Permaculture, a combination of permanent and agriculture. Other times whole new words get invented, with certain meaning being accorded to them, e.g. Google, Skype, Wikipedia, etc.
Creative use of language is essential for a good web marketing campaign, as creating a catchy new name or brand to define your concept is a big step towards achieving success. So you've got your concept / idea / business plan. Now you need to name your new baby. As you would carefully consider and research a name for a real child, so you should for your new concept.
The sky is the limit here, your imagination and obvious semantic relevance is all that lies between you and that special name. Sometimes enlisting the help of professionals can ease writer's block here, otherwise a good brainstorming session with colleagues, friends, family or even strangers passing by (handy for getting untainted feedback) should do the trick. The trick is to be creative and daring, as the sky is the limit and no cows are sacred!
Once you've created your new word to go with your concept, don't forget to check availability with the relevant domain registration authority and if your name is available, register & pay for it. If not, some more brainstorming around the core concept will be required.
Now it is time to figure out the Keywords and Keyword Phrases around your new concept. We'll explore this in a future article.
